Macpherson Strut, Double Wishbone, Trailing Arm Suspension System Types Working | Automobile

Macpherson Strut system consists of strut or shock absorber which includes coil spring and damper. here The purpose of coil spring is to store energy from a sudden jerk from road. and this stored energy which dissipate in form of heat with the help of damper which uses hydraulic fluid. here wishbone link provides bottom mounting point for hub of wheel. The upper part of the hub is rigidly fixed to the inner part of strut. here The wishbone is hinged to the cross member and resists accelerating, braking and side forces. during working the Macpherson Strut system cannot allow vertical movement of wheel without change in camber angle and sideways movement therefore it allows engineer less freedom to choose camber change. here noise and vibration transmit from road directly into body shell, giving higher noise levels compared with double wishbones system. Macpherson Strut system has simple design, Low manufacturing cost, and the system is lighter than double wishbone system and It gives maximum space in engine compartment and hence it is used in FWD vehicles. next is double wishbone suspension systems. It consists of two wishbone arms that are located between the knuckle on wheel assembly. here each wheel act and react independently, because The upper and lower control arms have ball joints on both ends which allow movement in multiple directions. here the Vertical movement is controlled through shock absorber and coil spring. here the wheel’s motions is controlled by parameters like camber angle and caster angle. Double wishbone suspension offers smoother driving experience, without affecting wheel alignment like in MacPherson strut suspension. here Double wishbone suspension gives flexibility to adjust parameters like camber angle, caster angle to meet the requirements of road surface. due to high number of parts the double wishbone suspension system is heavier and takes up more space (horizontally) than other suspension systems. The next is trailing arm suspension which employs trailing arm which are pivoted to car body at arm's front edge. and rigidly fixed to wheel at other end. here upper surface of frame supports coil spring. here the system allows wheel to move up and down to deal with road surface. Any lateral movement and camber change is not allowed. Nevertheless, when car rolls into a corner, the trailing arm rolls for same degree as the car body, thus it changes camber angle. the Trailing Control Arm prevents the sideways and forward and backward movement of the suspension. the trailing arm construction is very simple. here in trailing arm suspension the control arms are strong and durable.
